Umpires Joel Wilson and Chris Gaffaney's Ashes ends following an error-laden series
Umpire Joel Wilson’s Ashes has concluded after too many wrong decisions which culminated to a terrible blunder that decided the third Test.
Joel Wilson wont be umpiring in the remaining two Tests, neither will Chris Gaffaney whose seven decisions were overturned at Headingley. He fell one short of the record, which Joel Wilson leveled at Edgbaston during the opening Test.
The umpires for each Test were finalised before the series commenced.
Old-timer Marais Erasmus and Ruchira Palliyaguruge will be taking charge in the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford, starting Wednesday. Kumar Dharmasena will be the third umpire. Marais Erasmus will also be taking care of the fifth Test at the Oval, while Palliyaguruge and Dharmasena will reciprocate roles.
Umpiring has come under a scanner this Ashes series because of colossal number of on field decisions being reversed by DRS. A total of fifty decisions were reviewed over the first three Test and 38 per cent of which we reversed, The Australian reported.
Possibly, the biggest howler was the one which never went for review as Australia had ran out. With England needing just two runs to win the third Test but with just one wicket in hand, Nathan Lyon trapped Ben Stokes in front but Joel Wilson shook his head.
DRS showed three red lights, which means Australia would have won the Test and kept hold of the Ashes if they had an extra review.
