Government bans 59 China-linked apps TikTok, Helo, Shein; Check full list here

Amid ongoing border tensions between India and China, the government of India has taken a major decision by announcing a ban on 59 Chinese applications.

The list of apps banned by the government includes popular music-video app i.e. TikTok.

Citing the privacy concern, the government has decided to ban 59 apps, by claiming that these apps were engaged in activities that were prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity, and defence of India.

According to the press release, "The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”

The press release further added that the Ministry of Information Technology has received “many representations that were raising concerns from citizens regarding security of data and risk privacy relating to operation of certain apps.”

“The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) has also received many representations from citizens regarding the security of data and breach of privacy impacting upon public order issues," the press release read.

This is one of the biggest decisions that the government has taken against China amid the border tensions between two countries.

In the India and China clash, the Indian Army 20 personnel, including an Indian commanding officer, were martyred in the Galwan valley face-off.
