Ranks of Buddhist monks revoked by Thailand king following their arrest in sex and drugs scandal
King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand nullified the ranks of seven senior Buddhist monastic monks on Wednesday. Some of the monks were put behind the bars after a police raid last week.
Amongst the seven Buddist monks, three were from Sangha Supreme Council, a governing body of Buddhist monks in Thailand. In order to purify the tarnished image of the Buddist monks for their alleged involvement in sex scandals, Thai military government raided the temples.
After the seven monks were arrested, they were stripped of their monkhood. In the population of 69 million, 90 percent people follow Buddhism. Over the years Thailand temples have been embroiled in scandals like murder, sex and drugs.
