Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be retained by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2021 Indian Premier League auctions regardless of whether he plays for the national side or not, said former BCCI chief N Srinivasan.

The lack of a BCCI central contract for the World Cup winning skipper has given way to fresh rumours of his retirement but Srinivasan, who is the owner of CSK, elucidated that MS Dhoni will keep playing for his team.

"People keep saying when will he... how long will he play, etc. He will play. I can assure you. He will play this year. Next year he will go (to) the auction; he will be retained. So there is no doubt in anybody's mind," Srinivasan said.

Recently, the 38-year-old returned to training with Jharkhand team. He was in the A category, which fetches a player Rs 5 crore as annual retainership, until 2019.

The vice-president of the CSK Fans Association A R R Sriram was delighted about Srinivasan's remark.

"We are pretty sure that MS will be retained. There is no CSK without Dhoni. We won't let him go into the auction pool," Sriram said.

J Sivakumar, a supporter of Dhoni and member of the fan club, shared identical range of vision and stated that N Srinivasan’s words were music to his ears.

MS Dhoni's contract not being renewed was not exactly a surprise as he has not featured in a competitive match since World Cup semifinal on July 9.

MS Dhoni has featured in 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is for India, amassing over 17,000 runs and effecting a staggering 829 dismissals behind the stumps.
