The Supreme Court orders to persecute actor-politician Rajinikanth’s wife Latha Rajinikanth in a fraud case after she could not pay dues to the tune of Rs 6.20 crore to advertising firm Ad Bureau.
On Wednesday, the apex court said an investigation will be made into the case against her and she will be put on trial as a chargesheet has been filed.
In 2014, the dispute started over the movie “Kochadaiiyaan” starring Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukon. The movie was the directorial debut of Rajinikanth’s younger daughter Soundaraya.
Mediaone Global Entertainment Ltd in which Latha Rajinikanth was a director, allegedly took a loan of Rs 10 crore for the post-production work for the Rs 125-crore film. When she defaulted on payment and Rs 6.2 crore remained pending, the firm moved to court.
Mediaone Galobal Entertainment Ltd was to pay back Rs 10 crore including Rs 1.2 crore promised as “guaranteed profit”. The firm also clarified that they had got involved with the project on Latha Rajinikanth’s personal guarantee.
However, the Karnataka High Court earlier had cancelled legal proceedings against Latha. The High Court had said that the case was breach of agreement but not of fraud. Setting aside the High Court’s order, the Supreme Court said the High Court should not have cancelled the complaint at the initial stage.
In February, the apex court directed Lath to make balance payment within three months and she assured the court that it will be paid.
The top court last week pulled up the superstar’s wife for failing to ensure repayment, saying “If you don't pay, then be ready to face trial”.
