A proud moment for India, after Bajrang Punia has won a silver medal in Budapest, Hungary and also registered his name in the history books after becoming the first Indian wrestler to win two medals at the World Wrestling Championships on Monday.
The Wrestler had also won the bronze medal in the 2013 edition.
He fought against Japan’s wrestler Takuto Otoguro in the final and lost by 9-16 in the final of the 65 kg freestyle event.

He is the only India to win 2 World Championships medal (earlier won Bronze in 2013). India returned empty handed in last 2 editions.

However, Punia had fought like the fighter in the match against the Japanese and raced into a 5-0 lead and took lead to one point at one stage even after having the injury issues later in the match.
On the other hand, 19-year-old Otoguro became Japan’s youngest World Champion after winning the gold. He attacked consistently on the left leg of the 24-year-old Bajrang and emerged a comfortable 16-9 winner.
However, the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games gold medallist had to receive the silver, which is his second medal at the International level. He had also won the bronze in 2013 edition of the tournament.
As per the reports of HT, Punia said that ‘having reached the final, I expected to win gold but I will have to be satisfied with a silver medal.’ He also said that he is happy to receive the medal after bronze five years ago at the same venue.
